Education Through Tech
Education Through Tech
Hi! My name is JP O’Meara, and I'm sharing this blog post with you today To dive into my education through technology. I am 21 years old, so technology has always been a prominent part in not only learning, but my life in general.I remember all the way back when I was in elementary school and we had our own math devices called flashmasters that we could keep track of our progress on. I definitely could still use the device, as I am absolutely atrocious at math. But on the bright side, getting to use the cool gadgets definitely made it easier to look forward to.
Following my experience in elementary school, I feel like I always had a computer in my backpack. At Pelham Memorial High school, where I attended, we were assigned Chromebooks so that we could complete work and submit it through a Google classroom. This was fun because it was my first experience getting to work alongside my friends while being apart from them. When we were first introduced to Google docs, where we were able to share documents With Friends, it made life so much easier and more fun to learn if I'm being honest. The ability to type out what you're thinking and basically talk to your friends while also doing work makes your ideas feel more fluent and almost makes it so you're not even doing work.
If I'm going to be honest, personally I'd prefer to go back in time where we just had to fill out packets with pencil and paper. I am not the biggest technology person, and it's a combination of me being old school and being terrible with technology. However, I can attest to the fact that using technology in education now, in this day and age is so colossally important and some people don't understand.Literally everything is digital these days, there is no such thing as “A packet and pencil” Unless you're either taking a test or doing something on a Scantron.
I believe this is what makes it so important to be reaching out and helping non-profits like UUNIK, as these are kids who are learning at an accelerated level and they don't have the tools they need. When meeting with the kids it was incredibly clear that they are all super bright, and if they are provided with the right tools they need for success, their potential is unlimited. I am someone who is fortunate enough to be provided with these tools and I am proud to be where I am now, but we as a society need to make sure that not only do kids like me get these opportunities, but children like the ones at UUNIK do. They are all special minds, and if given the right opportunity, they can excel in any profession they choose.
