Opening Doors with United and UUNIK

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG! 

We are United and UUNIK, a group of University of Tennessee Students dedicated to making a difference. Our mission is to raise funds for a school computer lab at UUNIK Academy, a nonprofit organization that is focused on helping young African American students overcome some of the challenges they’ve faced and build a brighter future. This computer lab will hopefully open a new door of technological opportunities for them! 

Why this Matters 

Currently, 58% of UUNIK Academy students live in low to moderate income households. In this community, the youth are faced with many hardships and challenges that hinder both their educational and personal growth. The programs within UUNIK are designed to develop essential life skills, establish a sense of leadership and community, and ultimately inspire students to dream big and work for their goals.

The Team

Hello everyone!! My name is Khalid Fethi and I'm from Nashville, TN. I’m a sophomore majoring in accounting here at the University of Tennessee. I love to spend time with my friends, family, and my cat Niko! As long as I’m with the people I care about it doesn’t really matter to me what we’re doing. But on my own time I like to watch movies, catch up on reading, and crochet! Let me just say that it was a game changer when I realized that I could crochet AND watch a movie at the same time. Another thing about me is that I love fashion and buying clothes. It may be a little problem but I’ve managed to keep my spending habits under control for now. One more thing to know about me is that I’m really excited to be fundraising for the UUNIK Academy. That’s all from me for now but stay tuned to hear more from me later!

Hi! I'm Kate Shelton, a senior at the University of Tennessee studying elementary education with the goal of teaching 1st or 2nd grade one day! Over the past few weeks, I've loved getting to know the students at UUNIK and learning about what it takes to run these programs, which has deepened my passion for working with young learners. Outside of school, I enjoy being active and spending time outdoors. I love yoga, pilates, and running long distance! One of my favorite parts of college life is Tennessee football and everything that comes with being in Knoxville. Campaigning for UUNIK has allowed me to connect more deeply with the community here.

Hi! I’m JP O’Meara, a junior at the University of Tennessee studying finance with a goal of working in New York City one day. I've enjoyed every second of getting to know the students of UUNIK and learning about the process of running a program like this. Other than school, I enjoy listening to music, playing basketball, and hanging out with my family. I love all sports, especially New York sports. I am a Giants, Knicks, Yankees, and Rangers fan who enjoys all of the misery that comes with rooting for these teams. Being in Knoxville has given me a close look at what life is like in the south, and I love it. Working with UUNIK has provided me with a great opportunity to learn and further my knowledge about running programs like this, and I look forward to continuing our campaign.

A Journey of Gratitude

After weeks of dedication and work, our campaigning journey has come to an end. This campaign has been an inspiring experience, and we are thankful for everyone who supported us by reading our blogs, engaging with our efforts and immersing themselves in our mission to enhance education through technology. This passion is why we chose to support UUNIK Academy and their goal to build a computer lab. We understand the great role technology plays in today's education system, and we wanted to ensure students have the tools they need to thrive. This experience has been incredibly rewarding as we witnessed firsthand how UUNIK Academy positively impacts its learners! Where We Are Today  We are excited to share our success with UUNIK Academy and its supporters! Through our efforts, including campaigning, hosting a Cruze Farm percentage night, and organizing a Ped Walkway Event, we have raised almost $650 for UUNIK Academy. Education Through Tech   Hi! My name is JP O’Meara, and I'm sharing this blog post with you today To dive into my education through technology. I am 21 years old, so technology has always been a prominent part in not only learning, but my life in general.I remember all the way back when I was in elementary school and we had our own math devices called flashmasters that we could keep track of our progress on. I definitely could still use the device, as I am absolutely atrocious at math. But on the bright side, getting to use the cool gadgets definitely made it easier to look forward to. Following my experience in elementary school, I feel like I always had a computer in my backpack.
